Right Angle Tangle

KS2. Ma 3. 1f. use geometrical notation and symbols correctly.

2a. recognise right angles… that angles are measured in degrees… recognise that angles at a point on a straight line total 180 degrees…

4c. recognise angles as greater or less than a right angle or half-turn… measure and draw acute, obtuse and right-angles to the nearest degree.

Background

Lesson plan.

Having read the story you could draw – or get one of the children to draw – examples of acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles. Ask them if they can see examples of any of these angles around them. Show them how to make a “Right-Angle finder” – e.g. tearing off the corner of a piece of paper – and ask them to go around the classroom/school to find as many right angles as possible. Ask them to record the right angles they find and report back, especially noting the most unexpected right angles they find.

As an extension they could look for acute angles etc. Ask why they cannot make a single “Acute Angle Finder”. How could they be sure it is acute etc.? (An acute angle could be found to be less than a right angle by the right angle finder, an obtuse less than two right angle finders joined together.)

Plenary.

Get the children to give feedback about the right angles – and other angles that they found. Why was it important in many cases that these angles were used where they found them – e.g. buildings tend to fall down if the walls aren’t at right angles to the floor!
